KAREN BIRCH Having started my working life in the medical industry I was a board member of a multi-national pharmaceutical company by the time I was 29. I decided that I would prefer to work for myself and established a highly successful design and marketing agency to cater for the needs of the emerging biotechnology sector; most notably being involved from the first with PPL Therapeutics of Dolly The Sheep fame. From here I was head-hunted to lead the Biotechnology Industry Association, a role I combined with helping new companies to bring technologies from university to market. One of the leading emergent technologies in the mid 90's was the internet and I moved from biotechnology and went on to form an on-line retail business. This company became Scotland's leading Internet retailer, selling Scottish goods world-wide and winning many awards along the way! In addition I advised to Scottish Government on their e-commerce strategy I am also a gallery artist, selling work in galleries across Scotland so I retired from e-commerce in 2006. We started the3rdi magazine in 2009 as there was a real need to address business issues from a womansperspectivee. The magazine is designed for women in business and seeks to promote a positive work-life balance by addressing the issues of work, family and wellbeing. The magazine is a hugely successful collaborative project including businesswomen, entrepreneurs, social enterprises and inspirational coaches from across the UK.
